New IITs

Admission to as many as 6 new IITs - Gandhinagar, Punjab, Patna, Rajasthan, Bhubaneshwar and Hyderabad - are scheduled to take place from this year. This has, undoubtedly, given rise to speculations over what kind of success would these institutes be able to garner. This has also risen hopes of students seeking admission to the premier institute of India to get the brand 'IIT' inspite of having a lower rank.

Here is a transcript of what IIT Kharagpur has given over the issue.

Admission to New IITs:

The Government of India has announced setting up of 8 more new IITs in the 11th plan. Admissions in the following six new IITs, subjected to the approval@ of the competent authority of the Govt. of India, is likely to take place during the counselling session of JEE 2008. To begin with, each new IIT will admit students in the B Tech programmes in three branches only and the corresponding course codes for filling choice sheet is given in the table below. The academic programmes at these new IITs will commence in July/August 2008. The curriculum and syllabus as well as the fee structure and other rules for the new IITs will be broadly same as that of the respective mentor IITs.

@ If for any unforeseen reason the start of any new IIT is delayed, admission to that IIT will not be taken up during counseling session of JEE 2008.

The first year classes for IIT Punjab, IIT Rajasthan and IIT Bhuvaneswar will be conducted at the campuses of the respective mentor IITs. In the second year, the students from the above three IITs will be shifted to their respective locations. Classes for other new IITs will be conducted in the cities where the new IITs are located.



IIT Patna

IIT Patna’s campus will be on the outskirts of Patna in a 600 acre campus. Classes will start in 2008 from a temporary campus in Navin Govt. Polytechnic, Patliputra Nagar, a posh area of Patna. The campus will have 45000 sq ft of space. Two hostels to house boys and girls are also available next to the academic area. Faculty from IIT Guwahati will take the classes. It is expected that all operations will shift to the main campus by July 2010.

IIT Rajasthan

The location of the new IIT in Rajasthan will be announced by the Government of India. In the meantime, IIT Kanpur would be acting as the mentor institute of IIT Rajasthan.. Till the required infrastructure comes up, the classes will be held at the IIT Kanpur campus, after which the students will be relocated to the place in Rajasthan where the new IIT gets established. The students taking admission to the new IIT Rajasthan, along with their parents, will be required to give an undertaking to this effect.

IIT Gandhinagar

IIT Gandhinagar, in Gujarat, is one of the new IITs proposed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Gujarat is known for excellent infrastructure with thriving industries, prestigious academic and research institutes and an ambience which encourages entrepreneurship. IIT Bombay has been identified as the mentoring institution for the IIT in Gujarat. Till the campus of the new IIT in Gujarat gets established, the classes will be held within the premises of Vishwakarma Government Engineering College, Chandkheda, which is within the municipal limits of Gandhinagar. Students will be provided with residential and other facilities at a temporary location. The curriculum will be similar to that of IIT Bombay with some differences until the time the academic bodies of the new IIT is in place. Fee structure will be same as that of the mentoring Institute

IIT Bhuvaneswar

IIT Bhuvaneswar is one amongst the new IITs proposed by Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India. Its location will be intimated in due course and the academic programme will start from 24 July 2008 in the IIT Kharagpur campus. After completion of first year in IIT Kharagpur, the students will be shifted to new location where IIT Bhuvaneswar will be established. The first year fee structure will be same as that of IIT Kharagpur.

IIT Punjab

IIT Punjab is one of the new IITs proposed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. Its location will be known in due course of time and the academic session 2008-2009 will start on July 23, 2008. The curriculum, course structure and syllabus for the first year courses will be broadly as per that at IIT Delhi. The first year fee structure will also be same as that at IIT Delhi. Classes will initially start at IIT Delhi campus, and subsequently the students will be relocated to its new location as soon as IIT Punjab is established. The students will have to move to the new place and they will not be accommodated at IIT Delhi campus; an undertaking to this effect will have to be given at the time of joining.

We've received a number of doubts regarding whether admission to these new institutes would be a good option. See, the new IITs would definitely help you get the 'IIT' brand. And, it could be put to good effect also, particularly when one is applying to foreign universities abroad for further studies. But still, I would personally not recommend anyone to take one of these IITs unless you are really crazy about the brand name and are not getting anything in one of the well-established IITs. The major reason is quite evident - the missing infrastructure, the missing campus-life, the missing faculty. Everything which should be the foremost criteria for an institute to be an IIT, everything which actually makes an IIT what it is, is missing in these IITs....atleast for now. And the future does not promise too well a scene. It remains to be seen how the government manages to pull faculty for these new institutes when the previous IITs are already short.

Also, believe me, campus life is one of the most important facets to college. Apart from academics, you could improve in other fronts only through a lively campus which would certainly be missing in the new IITs. Then, again, it won't be possible to build sufficient (leave aside 'good') infrastructure in the short time they plan to.

Over all, I don't feel it worthwhile to go into one of the new IITs particularly if one is getting a branch of his preference in one of the established colleges.

WBJEE 2008 results declared

Hey all!!!
The West Bengal board certainly did a commendable work by getting results ready within 3 weeks of conducting the examination. Though, they cut a sorry figure on the technological front when the websites where results where available crashed – thereby punctuating the wait of students with agony. But nevertheless, finally, the results are out…

And with results, a series of doubts must certainly have plagued your minds. We precisely aim to help you out with regards to these doubts.

As far as the eternal question – ‘what rank would fetch which college’ is concerned, it’s difficult to predict this time. The reason being the fact that domicile is introduced back. One thing is certain though, that the opening as well as closing ranks would come down considerably as compared to last year. So, unfortunately, students with a slightly lower rank, might not be able to get a branch which that rank might have fetched previous year.

India Today engineering college rankings 2008 raise eyebrows, yet again

To our dismay, and undoubtedly everyone else’s who has a certain estimate about engineering colleges, India Today’s 2008 ranking of the colleges has been more of a farce. The worst affected is the section of the society which believes on such rankings blindly. In one of my earlier articles (click here to read the article), I had pointed out grave shortcomings in their rankings for the year 2007. This time around, we have no shred of doubt left in our minds that such rankings are but a means to create sensationalism. In the next few lines, I’d present a very brief post-mortem of this year’s ranking which should justify my statements.

Firstly, the ranking method adopted by the organization states that they had experts from each of the major cities giving scores to the colleges in their own city. It’s strange as to how one could compare statistics from two different people about two different colleges. Anyways, following is a snapshot of the rank list they gave this year:

The factual ranks given to IIT Mumbai and IIT Chennai are laughable, to say the least. It is no rocket science that I'd have to explain as to why this is a farce. Any given day, no NIT could match these two institutes as far as any of the parameters considered for the ranking are concerned. Institutes like these and other IITs along with DCE, NSIT and NITs languish a certain Vellore Institue of Technology in factual rank could only be a stunt to create sensationalism, as stated earlier. I would come to the scintillating drop in ranks suffered by International Institute of Technology, Allahabad. And ohh yes!!! they yet again, conveniently forget to mention anywhere in there analysis, that certain institutes like BITS Pilani were not considered in the rankings because these institutes opted out. They could fathom the superfluousness in these rankings, for which I respect them.

I don't have to bring out the finer points, but even an inexperienced eye would note unexplainable statistics. I'd rather want to bring forth a comparison with last year's rank list India Today came up with. Here's a snapshot for engineering ranks 2007:
Now, the real fun begins. Check out the ranks obtained by IIIT Allahabad across all the parameters last year. It ranked 9th in all of them. And now check out the rank it obtained this year. 23rd in most of them. Are you kidding me!!! What could possibly happen in a span of just one year which could see the institute dropping to 23rd from 9th in parameters like infrastructure and job prospects. Either, there was a bomb explosion in the institute which robbed it off all its infrastructure (which is improbable since I didn't see anything of that sort in the news), or the other 14 institutes which fared better might suddenly have unearthed treasure in their campuses which enabled them to build on infrastructure better than IIIT Allahabad. Also, there must certainly have been a drop in the number of companies also because of that non-existent bomb explosion thereby explaining the poor performance in job prospects this time....what a joke!!! but then, that's what the 'famous' India Today suggests.

Go a step further and check out the 'factual ranks' given to IIT Chennai and Kharagpur last year and compare them to this year. Chennai, unfortunately, did something so bad this year, that it sky-rocketed the institute from being ranked 5th last year to 21st this time. They surely must be doing everything bad at the moment - maybe the government stopped flowing in the cash to build on its infrastructure, the companies might have thought why go all the way south to hire students, and the professors suddenly must have become hostile to the students because of the students not performing well thereby hurting the 'student care' parameter too. Wow!!! the ranks really rock, don't they??

And Kharagpur. Great, they could leap from the 10th spot last year (just imagine!!!) to the 2nd spot this time. Everything bad and vicious that might've happened in Chennai was probably reverted in Kharagpur.

Nahh....leave it.
I wish to say no more. You are intelligent enough to judge the authenticity and credibility of such rankings. What I'd appeal to you is not to go by these ranking lists and inquire about an institute properly before taking any decision. What is sensationalism(wow!!! i actually managed that word the third time, credit that to India Today) to such media houses, is future for you. Don't let your career be a puppet in their hands.

AIEEE 2008

hey all

AIEEE results for the year 2008 declared on 3rd day of June'08 at 1730 hours.

AIEEE is usually the most awaited results of all for engineering aspirants primarily because a large number of colleges come under its purview. And, immediately after knowing the rank, you would be really impatient to know what courses might be available to you and what could be your best bet.

More or less, these do not get changed a lot and gives one a fair idea of the courses which might be available. IITJEE 2008

Firstly, I would like to congratulate all those who secured a rank in what is supposed to be the toughest test at the undergraduate level in the world - IITJEE.

It might very well happen for most of you that you might not be satisfied with the rank you got and must be expecting something much better. But, I would suggest you not to fret over it and be jubilant of your achievement. Finding your name among IITJEE qualifiers should be reason enough to cheer you up. No rank is bad in an exam which gives you a ticket to the best institutes in the country.

Those who missed out, should not feel disheartened for it is not the end of the world. There are a galore of options open for you including AIEEE and various state level exams.

At this juncture, the first question which comes to one's mind is - 'What options will I get at my rank and what should I opt for?' It is very important that you get a clear perception of what discipline you want to take. This has been a shortcoming of our education system where you have to select a discipline without having a proper idea of what it offers. But then, that is the way it is.

It's exactly this problem we offer to address through this forum. We invite questions from students who have cleared the exam and have myriad queries unanswered. Ask us anything ranging from what you can get with your rank to what kind of courses are available at the IITs....

With as many as 6 new IITs to begin operation this year (yes, it's 6 now), it opens up a plethora of opportunities giving an outside chance for students with a low rank to get into an IIT. Also, many students have confusions about the 4 and 5 year courses IITs offer.

WBJEE 2008 (contd)

Hey everybody,
I would like to thank a couple of people for bringing to our notice two mistakes in our solutions to the physics paper of WBJEE 2008. Here are the correct solutions to those two questions:

31. The radius of curvature of a concave mirror is 24 cm and the image is magnified by 1.5 times. The object distance is: (a) 20 cm

37. A silicon and a germanium diode has identical physical dimensions. The band gap in silicon is larger that that in germanium. An identical reverse bias is applied across the diodes. (c) The reverse currents are identical in the two diodes


We also regret not having been able to upload the solutions to the mathematics and chemistry papers. This has been due to a very busy schedule we've been subjected to. Though, we are happy that we were the first ones to upload the physics solutions.

WBJEE 2008

WBJEE'08 which was scheduled to be held in April, due to reasons which are quite well-known, was shifter to 24th day of May'08 - that is today....

Students gave their exams amidst lots of speculations over what kind of subjective questions does the board plan to give....they did turn out to be tough - as the general opinion said. Though, they carried double the marks of their objective counterparts, thereby justifying their difficulty :)

Now, a quick analysis:
Physics was definitely the easiest of the lot. A more or less decent preparation would get one through with a very good score. Chemistry and Maths were almost on a similar platform. Though, certainly slightly tougher than Physics. Chemistry, in particular, had a good dose of organic chemistry and those who are comfortable with it, would have found it quite easy as well. Maths, as always, had a slight tinge of 'lengthiness' attached to it, but nothing which was not doable.

The deciding factor would almost certainly be Mathematics.


Here, I and my friend have provided the solution for the Physics paper (the objective section only). Due to paucity of time, as well as resources, we haven't yet come up with the other subjects' solution. But, we are trying our best.

We are, but humans (oh yes :D ). And hence, mistakes are indispensable. We would love to know if we made any mistakes in the solution. Also, because of lack of time, we have just given the answers (and not the solutions or the other options). If, you have any doubt as to how we reached a particular answer, you are free to contact us here. We'll try to reply you at the earliest :)

hey to all!!!

hello world!!!
this blog sees light at almost midnight, as almost all blogs do :P

but this one, has a purpose to serve. we embark this journey to help those students who spend atleast two years of their lives in the eleventh and twelfth standards dreaming of a career in engineering...having been through the turmoil, we kind of have a feeling as to what is needed by students and when.

i would cut this one short, coz i had a really tiresome day...and would give way for what this blog has been given birth :)
