IITJEE 2008

Hello

Firstly, I would like to congratulate all those who secured a rank in what is supposed to be the toughest test at the undergraduate level in the world - IITJEE.

It might very well happen for most of you that you might not be satisfied with the rank you got and must be expecting something much better. But, I would suggest you not to fret over it and be jubilant of your achievement. Finding your name among IITJEE qualifiers should be reason enough to cheer you up. No rank is bad in an exam which gives you a ticket to the best institutes in the country.

Those who missed out, should not feel disheartened for it is not the end of the world. There are a galore of options open for you including AIEEE and various state level exams.

At this juncture, the first question which comes to one's mind is - 'What options will I get at my rank and what should I opt for?' It is very important that you get a clear perception of what discipline you want to take. This has been a shortcoming of our education system where you have to select a discipline without having a proper idea of what it offers. But then, that is the way it is.

It's exactly this problem we offer to address through this forum. We invite questions from students who have cleared the exam and have myriad queries unanswered. Ask us anything ranging from what you can get with your rank to what kind of courses are available at the IITs....

With as many as 6 new IITs to begin operation this year (yes, it's 6 now), it opens up a plethora of opportunities giving an outside chance for students with a low rank to get into an IIT. Also, many students have confusions about the 4 and 5 year courses IITs offer.

We would be more than pleased to answer all your queries in this forum. Looking forward to a fruitful discussion which helps you all to make effective decisions...

cheerz
PL

hello saransh

congrats for your rank.
I would suggest you to go to the following link once:
http://www.jee.iitb.ac.in/2007/openclose.htm
this would give you an idea about the courses you are getting.
if you talk about the general perception, then among the courses you are getting, the following are the most in-demand courses:
iit bombay - chemical
iit delhi - chemical, electrical(power), maths n computing(5 yr)
iit kharagpur - electrical, mechanical, ece(5 yr)
iit kanpur - mechanical
iit madras - mechanical, electrical(5 yr)
iit roorkee - CS, electronics
iit guwahati - CS

I don't think you should be looking any further than this if you want to go by the general trend. All these courses are considered very good. As far as knowing about them is concerned, you could goto the website of any IIT and check out the course structure. There, you'll get detailed syllabus and the course perspectives. That should help you out.

If you still have any doubts about a particular course, contact us back...

all the best :)

hi,i have got rank 3632.....wat according to u can i get and should take?should i go for a new iit?

PL said...

hi nitish.

congrats for qualifying. unless you are dying for an 'iit' tag, you could take up a course like chemical/mechanical at IT-BHU. Also, some courses like petroleum engineering at ISM are also pretty good. If you are hell bent for an 'iit' tag, and have a flair for sciences, you could take up the M.Sc courses (5 yr) in offer at IIT roorkee. You could also take up a course like Industrial Chemistry or Economics at IIT kharagpur and then try for a department change later after the first year. But i would not suggest you to go for that. Your best bet would probably to go for IT-BHU.

also, try exploring other avenues like BITS pilani and AIEEE top institutes. If you are getting a very good branch in either, then, you would have more options.

Going for a new IIT could be really dicey and could work both ways. So, unless you have no options left with you, i won't suggest anyone to for the the new institutes

PL said...

nitish,
Applied Geology is also a good option you have at IIT kharagpur. Try going through the subject content of all the courses which you could get. All IITs give the complete course structure in their website. That should help you to pick n chose

Crazy Viking said...

how is the mtech integrated course in geophysics at roorkee?

PL said...

nitish,
by 'how is a particular course' if you are asking how are the placements finally offered after you complete the course, then let me tell you that placements are guaranteed for all courses in any IIT. Geophysics has very exciting prospects and is definitely a very good course. Infact, one of the highest paying companies Schlumberger hand-picks students from such departments.

What I mean to say is, you don't have to worry as far as placements are concerned. Pay more emphasis to select a course which suits you. It's the most important factor.

sir i ranked 3635.can ih ope for cs/ece/mechanical/electrical in any of the 6 new iits?

PL said...

@knightrider
congrats for ur rank. At your rank, I would say that you might safely land up with ece/electrical atleast in one of the new IITs. An outside chance of a CS as well. What you can do, is to ensure that you fill up the codes of these courses in the top of your list when you go for counseling and then wait for lady luck to favour you. :)

saiganesh said...

will all the 6 iits be functioning from this year?is it possible to comment on how strict these new iits will be on allowing branch transfers to students?

PL said...

Yes, 6 new IITs will begin functioning from this year, with each of them taking in 120 students in total. Though, these new IITs will be heavily dependent(or, completely dependent) on other IITs or nearby institutes for infrastructure. For example, the IIT in Orissa would have its students taking their classes probably in IIT Kharagpur for atleast 3 years. I really doubt if even the officials would be able to tell you anything about the exact structure these IITs are going to take at this juncture. But you might want to wait. The counseling brochure which u get will have all the details of branch change and the procedure in all IITs.

saiganesh said...

sir,
will the opening and closing ranks of BHU be similiar to last year if given that it will soon be IIT varanasi?which is considered more secure? admission in new iits with no
image yet and might take 10-20 years to get the status of existing iits, or admission in IT-BHU which has some brand image whose conversion to IIT is still not official?can i hope to get ece in IT-BHU? i ranked 3635.

Unknown said...

sir,
i have got a rank of 5760 in this years exam.I went through the list of closing ranks in 2007 from that i could make out i may get admission in an M.Sc course in ISMU. But what i want to ask is that with such a low rank would i able to secure admission in any of the new 6 IITs and will i get info during my counselling as to which courses are open at that point

PL said...

the opening and closing ranks for IT-BHU should be on similar lines, or should not attract much change. Speculations of it getting the 'IIT' status has been there for a couple of years now. Without doubt, IT-BHU would be a far better and secure option than the new IITs(as far as placements are concerned). ece for you might be a bit tough...though, u might get mathematics n computing at IT-BHU which is considered very good. You are also getting a couple of good streams like chemical, mech (an outside chance)...the choice is yours...try going by the course structure of these courses. They'll help you decide if you have an interest in them, there is no reason you don't pursue them in lieu of a new IIT. Though, I believe, if you get a CS/ece in a new IIT, there shouldn't be any problem as far as placements are concerned.

PL said...

@abhinav

congrats for your rank.
It's really difficult to say whether you could get a shot at the new IITs. Unpredictability rules this year. Though, honestly, I feel that you might just miss it. Anyways, one should not be pessimistic. You could always fill up the codes of the new courses when you get to the counseling.

During counseling, you'll be informed of the courses which have already been filled up prior to the day you go. That is, you will be told of the courses which do not have any seats remaining on the basis of last day's data. You would then be asked to fill a priority list with course codes of the remaining courses. It is advisable to fill up all the options you have.

Unknown said...

thank you very much sir for your guidance.

PL said...

@abhinav
thank you for appreciation...and, we are students just like you(just a couple of years older, maybe). So, we'd rather not be addressed as 'sir' :) do get back to us if you have any more doubts

what are the plus and minus points of a dual degree course over a 4 yr course? why dont many students opt for it?( i have observed last year's closing ranks and noticed they are "easier" to get than 4 yr B-Tech courses). Is it considered a waste of time if i want to go pursue an MBA after i get my B-tech?how are placements of dual degree students compared to B-tech 4 yr people?Will the similiar trend follow in new iits?

I got a rank of 5568. I am interested in Mechanical. Whether the All-India Rank declared includes OBCs, SCs and ST too ?

I saw in paper that the total seats declared this year is 6872. Am I assured of a seat in any of the IITs or IT-BHU or ISMU - Dhanbad ?

Unknown said...

Hi, I have got 3289 in IIT. I am in great confusion regarding the options I can have. Can you please help me by answering my following queries.
1) What options of IITs and branches can I have?
2) As per 2007 admissions, I might get ECE, Chemical, Mechanical..in IT-BHU. I am really confused, should I choose some of these in IT-BHU, or any of the branch in IIT (As per 2007 data, I might get Biotechonology, Materials & Met, Chemical Science, Civil...)
3) Also need to know, as per studies and placement both which is the best option from IT-BHU, Delhi College of Engg., BITS Pillani.

PL said...

@knightrider
you've noticed it right. usually studdents prefer 4 yr to a 5 yr course. Actually, this trend should not last very long. it is just a reflection of the industry's perception. a 4 yr course is more popoular among industries(but only slightly). if you are getting a 5 yr course, there should be no inhibitions. it is actually better than a 4 yr course if you consider the fact that you get a b.tech+m.tech at the end of 5 yrs. (actually, this also has to do with the fact that m.tech from IIT does not carry as much weight as a b.tech. but that is when we talk about only m.tech degree and not b.tech+m.tech)

If you want to go for MBA after graduation and are pretty sure about it, and you are getting a 4 yr course which is of interest to you, you have no reason not to take it. However, MBA after 5 years would not be out-of-place. I know of a student in my college who got a 100 percentile in CAT and has got admission to IIMC inspite of being a 5 year student.

please check out with the person who has written that only 3 iits begin this year. m sure that he missed out on the news.

PL said...

@saransh

this decision should be yours. look for the detailed course structure of the courses mentioned. and, i would suggest you not to exclude roorkee and guwahati if you get CS there and you are interested in the course. they are considered very good. the courses mentioned are all very diverse and (dare I say) equally good. I cannot chose that for you

PL said...

where you'll find a link to a page which gives last year's opening and closing ranks for IIT. That would give you a proper idea.

PL said...

@nabardian
I believe it does include the OBCs, etc. though, that should not make much of a difference. do the seat numbers you mentioned include the OBCs as well?? If i doesn't, then you are assured of a seat(total seats include courses like architecture)

PL said...

@palk

1) please check out
http://engineering-portal.blogspot.com/2008/05/iitjee-2008-part-2.html
this page has a link to last year's opening and closing ranks. that will give you an idea. I'll say the same things which are evident from there.

2) It's your shot. go for the course which you believe your interest beckons. IT-BHU is really good though, it doesn't have the IIT tag. Other courses you mentioned have that IIT tag along with them but they might not be of your interest. It is completely your call. I am not the correct person to chose for you.

3) The three colleges you mentioned, BITS Pilani is definitely considered best of them all. Though, please note, it is completely my personal opinion.

I know it's difficult for a person at your juncture to select a course which is meant to define your life. but then every one has to undergo this.

PL said...

@rajesh gusain
IIST is not a bad option, i can safely say that. rest lays on you.

honestly speaking, as of right now, aerospace sadly doesn't have much to offer in India. Though, it has exciting prospects outside this country. but, you can never be sure of how things might change in 4/5 years time. you could definitely be sure that if you are good in the stream, then getting through top aero-related organisations in India won't be difficult...

PL said...

@hrishikesh

congrats for the rank dear. I believe, you can and will certainly land up with some stream at one of the new IITs/ISM/BHU. though, i would hardly suggest someone to go for the new IITs if you are getting an option. the very idea of spending 2/3 years in some obscure institute before you get proper infrastructure is dreadful....

Your aieee rank is definitely very good. congrats for that too. If you are interested in IT-related fields like CS, information technology, etc, then I'd rather suggest you to gor for IIIT which you'll get very easily. Infact, at your position, I'd advice you to go for your choice of branch either in IIIT or NIT trichy/warrangal/calicut or DCE - whichever suits you.

and thanks for the appreciation :)

@abhinav

ECE at IT-BHU is definitely very good. if you are inclined towards electronics and are not getting it in any of the IITs, you should take it in IT-BHU without inhibitions...all the best :)

PL said...

@anubhav
if you do not have any specific interest and want to go by popularity, I'd suggest you take metallurgy or textile in one of the IITs....or you could take electronics at IT-BHU. biotech is considered as an upcoming option, but refrain from taking it if you hate biology (as i do :P )
civil is also not bad if you get it in IIT bombay, delhi....
what I mean to say is, none of the options are bad. you'll definitely get placement at the end of your course. (and a good placement is always on the cards if you do well in your course)....
so, try and figure out as to doing what would give you maximum satisfaction....that'll be your answer

PL said...

@akshay

thanks for appreciating dude :)

congrats for the wonderful rank. I'd say, don't leave IIT for anything else at your rank. Incase you have an inclination towards IT-related courses, going to IIT roorkee with CS or ECE could be a good option(u might get atleast the 5 year ones). CS at IIT guwahati is also quite good, to be frank....don't shy away from guwahati just because it is a newer IIT. Also, you could get mechanical & EE dual at IIT kharagpur. then you have options like Instrumentation also. Chemical engineering at IIT bombay, delhi, kharagpur, kanpur all are good (in that order, i'll say)...
you're getting production engg at IIT delhi but I'd not be very positive about it.

get down your options and think which one you want to pursue. take a course which you won't repent having taken later. for example, you won't and shouldn't take biotechnology if you have aversion to biology....check out the course structures and decide for yourself.

going by the present status, probably taking CS/ECE/EE at one of the IITs are considered best....it's your call from there...and you definitely don't need to think beyond IITs for other exams n scores...

Unknown said...

Thnx bhaiya....i got AIR-2110 so i m gettin ECE at IT-BHU...but an ex-student told me tht the branch is nt in good shape dese days.....

could u suggest ne oder options....

PL said...

@abhinav

See, if you are really looking at other options, i could suggest you mathematics and computing in IIT Kharagpur. that is a very good branch with the right mix of maths and computing....though, be informed, that the course comes under the purview of the department of mathematics....it's good, without doubt....
I think you might also get CS in IT-BHU. that is good too....look for the opening and closing ranks of last year...you'll know your options better

relative to these??

I have got AIR 3758 in IIT
and AIR 1142 in AIEEE(S.R:172)
also 321 in BITSAT
Overall what would you suggest??

PL said...

@surbhi
thanks for appreciating :) we'll strive to be better

congrats for your rank
1.Going by previous year's stats, biotech at iit guwahati looks a difficult proposition, but considering the fact that new IITs begin operation, you might just scrape in. Since long people have been saying that biotech is the next upcoming branch, though it is yet to be seen. biotech definitely has very good prospects abroad and is a very good branch if you want to go for further studies to ssome university abroad after your graduation.

2. Geophysics course anywhere would fetch big bucks atleast going by the present scenario because it attracts big oil companies which are ready to shed money. but, in lieu of the high salary you get, they extract more than enough work from you. they are usually known for field work and mostly the work satisfaction is not that high. i believe girls can do everything which guys could, and so, if you are determined enough to work hard and are not averse to field work....plus money is your only ultimate goal, there's no reason why you shouldn't take the course.

3. not much of a difference really. except that a mtech dual/integrated course is considered more towardes engineering and the msc course more inclined to science. but it doesn't have much of an effect on your placement. companies usually come looking for students from a particular discipline and take away those who have enough knowledge about their courses.

4. the course of msc economics would certainly be helpful to you if you go for an mba after graduation as you'd be doing things related to economics in mba. but, when you've decided for sure that you want to go for mba and are sure that you won't budge from your decision, then why not take a 4 year course. that would save you one year. I don't think any batch of msc economics has passed out yet. so it'd be difficult to say what kind of response would it get from the industry. but, it should be good going by the course structure.

5.If you are sure you'll go for mba after graduation, then there's no point missing out on the feeling of being an IITian. So, I'd definitely say go for an IIT. prefer a 4 year course if you're getting it somewhere, or take a 5 year course of your choice which you are getting. you're getting economics/chemistry in iit kharagpur n eco at kanpur....take one of them.

PL said...

@mayank

job prospects in Chemical at IIT Delhi are very good, without doubt.
electronics and chemical are branches pole apart. it really depends on which one for you have a liking for. it has to be a personal choice. I could say that placements are good in both. check out the course structure of both the courses. there must be after all somewhere u'll find a particular thing you might not like. or, on the lighter side, if you want to get away from home for a while atleast, you might consider taking roorkee over delhi. get any excuse you want, and select one of the branches when you are getting that luxury. :)

PL said...

@karthick

congrats for the good rank :)

if you have an inclination for IT-related courses (CS/ECE etc), go for IIIT. If not and if you have to select institute-wise, take BITS Pilani(pilani campus...not the other ones) mech. that is, if you are getting the same branch in both IT-BHU and BITS Pilani, i'd definitely root for the latter.

a link to the opening and closing ranks for last year is given here. that should help you know what courses you might get this time.

nevertheless, i won't suggest anyone to go for the new IITs unless you are hell bent for the IIT tag and a good branch.

if you're getting mech at BITS Pilani, there's no reason you shouldn't take it (again unless you are really adamant to be called an IITian).m saying that, coz as it is, it'd be difficult for you to get into one of the established IITs with your rank. And, mechanical at BITS Pilani would be far better than the courses you might get in ISM and IT-BHU. so, BITS Pilani would be the best bet for you

PL said...

@swapnil
congrats for the good rank

i m writing assuming that you'll go to iit bombay only. see, whatever branches you will get in a 5 year dual degree program, you'll get those branches also in a 4 year b.tech degree at iitb with your rank. then, why do u want to go for a dual degree program unless you like the idea of getting two degrees in just 5 years. a much better option would be that you take a 4 year course and after completing it, go for a good university abroad for your MS even if it takes you an additional year. it's much more rewarding than doing a 5 year course. so, take a 4 year course of your choice. you are getting chemical/mechanical/engg phy/aero there. i'd say, go for either chem/mech. take your shot by going through their course structures. (they are quite similar)

PL said...

@ankita

u have a difficult choice to make, indeed. it's quite true that one should take geophysics only if money is your sole goal (though, let me tell you that not all students of the department get the high-paying jobs)....there is another aspect of geophysics which usually people ignore....that is, if you want to go for further studies abroad in this field, then it is advantageous because there aren't many students in India in this department. so, one would definitely be at a better chance to get a good foreign university against other departments....

i don't think economics at kanpur has any risk as far as eco students from eco-centric institutes are concerned. whoever gave you that idea!!! i believe that these two would be dealt completely differently and you don't have to worry about that.

doing mba after iit would be a complete shift and then doing graduation from iit is as good as doing plain graduation. i mean, if you want to go for mba, stream in graduation doesn't matter. take anything you want, it won't affect your shift to finance or any other sector as such.

PL said...

@ankit
congratulations for the rank :)

please check out the link we've given in one of the posts to the last year's opening and closing ranks....that'd give you an idea as to what you might get...also, you might wait for some days for the counseling brochure which would contain last year's opening and closing ranks for all streams.

See, if you want to go for further studies after btech, i'd say, u MUST go to an IIT.....it makes a hell lot of a difference when you knock at the gates of universities abroad if you are from an IIT....so, in that case, if you aren't getting a branch in any of the old IITs, there should be no qualms taking admission to a new one....normally, i won't suggest anyone to go for new IITs, but in your case, if you aren't getting an established one, you would rather take a new one....

1-mtech electrical power systems n power elect
2-mtech mech in energy tech
3-mtech mech in intelligent manufacturing
4-mtech mech in product design
5-engineering design

PL said...

@anurag
congrats for the rank....

if you have to take a course in iitm only, i'd suggest taking the first course - electrical power systems n power elect.....the reason being, that this course allows you to have a wider spectrum of job prospects....if you go to a mech-related field, the options for jobs narrow down relative to the electrical related field. with electrical, you get a genuine chance to get through electronics companies and software ones too if you take proper electives....with mech also this is possible, but then you'd have to work much harder.....

@ankit
congrats for the rank :)
your parents' wish is not completely unfounded also...i'd say it's better to get into a very good branch (that'd mean CS/ECE in the present scenario...basically, those branches which guarantee you a good package at the end of the course) in a college which might not match IITs but are definitely very good. I won't suggest you to take up any new IIT, particularly because you have a good rank in AIEEE. your best option for AIEEE would definitely be DCE (any branch you prefer - and CS/ECE if you want 'good branch')

it's difficult to predict whether you'll get cs/ece in a new IIT....it's really a dicey situation. what you can do is to fill up the course codes in your preference list when you go for your counseling and then sit back hoping you get them....

thanx for the quick reply..

though i hav asked this before this as well ..but still
will ur answer change if i m going to
go for MBA after b.tech?

PL said...

@ankit
hmm.....see, being from IIT gives you an edge definitely if you go for mba....but, it's not that you can't or won't get through a good college for mba if you are not from IIT....infact, even if you get the edge of being from an IIT, it's not easy to capitalise over that advantage.....not everyone can do that.......so, it doesn't really matter

thank u for ur advice...
last year at iitm the cut off rank for the mtech in power systems course was 1067...do u think @ 1108i can get that course??
also r there ne other courses in iitb or iitm with electrical base which i can get??

PL said...

@anurag
to be honest, it seems a bit difficult for you to get it at 1108...but u never know....u should definitely fill it up when you are filling the preference order in counseling....i don't think you'd get anything in iitb or iitm of electrical base....speaking of which, please don't form an opinion that mech related fields are bad.....they're very good too....they are considered only a tad bit lower than electrical, but still it's a very good field of study

Unknown said...

-mtech mech in energy tech
-mtech mech in intelligent manufacturing
-mtech mech in product design
-engineering design
could u please rank the abov courses at iitm...the best being placed first...thank u for ur help

PL said...

@anurag
it's really difficult to give a rank to these courses...they're really quite similar to each other in content as well as placement-wise......i'd say, go through the course structure, and decide whichever suits u best.....though, personally, i'd keep engineering design lower....but again, that's entirely your interest which matters.....

would elec with microelectronics be the best choice???

Anonymous said...

AIR 550,

sir, in case i consider going 2 all iits, then wht would u suggest me???

Anonymous said...

hey...u r doin a gr8 job buddy!

my air is 823. i'm deeply interested in electronics (since ma childhood :) ) n i may get dual degree in kgp n also elec (power) @ delhi. I can surely get electrical dual @ kgp. but ppl r advising me not to go to kgp. However rather than electrical (power), i'll prefer electronics. Or shud i go for mech @ bombay/delhi. What's the best option for me among these.

I also wanted to know about engineering physics, wat r d job prospects, which kinda industry recruits such engineers? Or does it helps in a career in research only??

Aditya Prakash Garg said...

but i dont wanna go there!!

so u tel'me shud i go for civil or ''production n industrial engg.'' or ""materials scnce n mettalurgical engg.""??

placement in an mnc is my priority!!

PL said...

@sav
hey...sorry for being late this time....but we had certain other commitments which could not have been avoided.......
please check it with http://ccb.nic.in/CCB2008/OrCr/Stream.htm
to find which streams will you get....actually, aieee being a state-specific exam, it's not possible to tell you like this

PL said...

@ishan
congrats for the great rank :)
elec with microelectronics is certainly very good....though, if you want to go for mba after graduation, why not take a 4 year mech course...as far as placemnts go, they would be good for both mech and the course you are speaking about....

PL said...

@swapnil

congrats for the rank :)
see, it'd largely depend on your choice...if you are inclined towards IT, take CS/ECE at iit kharagpur...mech - iit bombay....chem - bombay/delhi....so, you are basically getting everything of your choice....you dont need to think about which college to go....just go with the branch of your choice

PL said...

@rahul
thanks a lot :)
congrats for the rank....
i'd say, electrical power is certainly the best probably in what you are getting with elec dual in kgp just falling short....mech is good too but considering you have a deep-rooted interest for ece, don't take it...and, even if you take elec(power), be rest assured that you could take up subjects related to electronics and would also get a chance for higher studies in ece easily rather than taking up mech

engineering physics definitely is more research-inclined....please be informed that even big companies have a r&d sector, and such engineers would definitely be in demand theree

PL said...

@aditya
congrats for the rank :)
if you are really crazy about city life, as u say, don't go to kgp....though, considering your options, civil is definitely the best you are getting....infrastructure boom is what experts say India is undergoing, and the scenario after 4 years sure looks lucrative....
production engg is an off-shoot of mechanical engg...during placements, these branches have direct competition with mechanical students...hence, avoid it because mechanical already takes in a lot of students....you could ake up materials science n metallurgical engg.....it's good....
placement in mnc is, as you say a priority for you....please be informed that there are also companies which don't look for department-specific students...for example, banking companies....they are more performance driven and it's your personality which could get u a job in these....

again manufacturing science is mech off-shoot....i'd rather refrain from taking these

textile is also a good option considering the fact that the course is unique....

thanks for the great job you guys are doin..raised my confidence a lot! i ranked 3635..according to u, i have a gud chance for electrical in new iits .My bitsat score is 385 i can easily get cse in pilani..i am desperate for the "iit" tag..sure these new iits dont have the image now, but will catch up some day..i want to do management after my b-tech so i guess wat i take now really doesnt matter that much but shud i take the new iits anyway?can placements and pay packages for cse in bits pilani be comparable to cse students of the already existing iits?

PL said...

@knightrider
thanks for appreciating dude!!!
u do certainly have a chance of elevctrical in one of the new iits........but when u've got such a good score in bitsat, i'd really suggest you to go for cse in bits pilani....i understand that 'iit' tag could mean a lot, but i can tell you that cse in bits pilani is really good.....with such an opportunity available, don't go for new iits - that's my take....and as it is, you want to do management....so, an iit tag wont make a helluva of a difference....

Hi, you are doing a great job and we all will be ever grateful to you.
I have secured 5568 rank and am interested in Mechanical. My chances in any of the IITs is ruled out and ITBHU is very weak. Will I get Mechanical in ISMU-Dhanbad or any of the new IITs ?

I have also secured 4598 rank in AIEEE from Madhya Pradesh with state rank of 270. Chances of getting Mechanical in NIT, Bhopal is bright. NIT, Trichy and Surathkal appears to be a border case.

Kindly advise me on whether I should take ISMU Dhanbad over NIT, Trichy, Surathkal and Bhopal. What about new IITs ?

Hello sir,
I must say you give very helpful suggestions.
I have got Air 896 in JEE. What should i chose between
COMP. SC. & ENGG. with M.Tech in INF.TECH (5 Yr Dual Degree)at roorkee vs ELECTRONICS & COMMUNICATION at roorkee?
Also how are the job prospects maths computing( integrated 5 year) at Delhi?

PL said...

@nabardian
hey...thanks for the appreciation :)
and, congrats for doing well :)

now, you seem to have got a rank in both aieee and iit which makes your position highly equivocal....new iits --- you can never say...it's a real dicey situation as it's difficult to predict how will be the reaction to it....it's because of the new iits, you might just be lucky enough to land up with mech at ISMU....
if u are really interested in mechanical...then, go for ISM>trichy>warrangal>surathkal>bhopal
that is what i suggest....a complete personal suggestion though....ur call is what matters....
m not suggesting anyone to take up new iits....

PL said...

@mayank
thanks a lot buddy :)
congrats for your rank...
if you've boiled down to these two courses, that's great....see, if you want to do an MBA after graduation(i.e. u are very sure about it) then go for the 4 year course instead of 5 year one....both CS and ECE branches would give you great placements at the end irrespective of a 4 year or 5 year course...please remember, that sometimes, if you plan to go for further studies after a 5 year course in some foreign university, you are asked as to why u want a master's degree even after doing it once....that is not the case with a 4 year course....i've laid down the facts......your call from here :)

maths n computing is definitely a very good branch....though, be informed that the branch comes under the department of mathematics and not under the computer science department....which means, the course will be inclined more towards mathematics sprinkled with its relation with computing....job prospects are really good :)

once again i thank fr ur help

saiganesh said...

can you please give us the link to your article on new iits?

PL said...

@anurag
thanks buddy :)
i take it that you are going for further studies --->> usually when you are from IIT, people go for further studies in universities of repute in the western part of the world...not that getting a further degree from an Indian university is not good, but the general tendency is to go to a university of repute....again, it's not that you won't be able to go for further studies if you do a 4 year or 5 year course...though, u are generally asked by universities as to why you want another degree when you already have an equivalent M.Tech.....it's your call totally....you could do a 5 year course also and then go for a ph.d. degree to another institute (or u could also do it in the same IIT)....it won't affect much...though, generally, a 4 year course is preferred because it keeps your options open....but, no problem as such with a 5 year course

PL said...

@knightrider
would appreciate your following our forum so closely enough....thanks :)
the article has just been posted...you would get it at http://engineering-portal.blogspot.com

i ranked 3635, in case i want to get a seat in the existing iits, i found that i can get these branches by going through last year's closing ranks. what would you suggest?
applied geology,
economics,
xploration geophysics,
geological technology,
process eng. with mba
maths and computing
i can take any subject..not disinterested in a particualr kind of subject or anything like that. It wud be much helpful if i got more info about the last 2nd branch.can i technically be called an "engineer" if i take up any of the above branches?

PL said...

@knightrider
don't take economics unless you are very interested in it...exploration geophysics would fetch you big bucks but the jobs are 'in'famous as far as satisfaction is considered....a similar case with applied geology...though, these branches are good if you go for further studies abroad....maths and computing is supposed to be a boon for students with a low rank and who want to keep themselves related to the world of computers...though, be informed that the course comes under the department of mathematics....the course will basically aim at mathematics with a general dose of computing and facets related...it's definitely a good branch...can't comment on the placements as it is relatively new in IIT guwahati (which is where u'll get)....but, i can tell u that it's doing well in IIT Kharagpur....
see, as far as IIT Kharagpur is concerned, I can tell you that you get an option after your first year to take a dual degree program in MBA (i.e. in 5 years you get a b.tech + mba degree)....how far the program succeeds, is yet to be seen as the first batch has still not passed out....usually, when you are from IIT, students tend to get inclined to get the best....hence, they aim for IIMs if at all they are interested in management....that is why, this course hasn't yet got that much appreciation as of now....but, you can't really say what happens once the placements begin....

technically, 'NO' you won't be called an 'engineer'....but then, you won't be considered less :)

i'd suggest maths and computing...or exploration geophysics(not applied geophysics)....your call from here

Sir,
What kind of course andWhat are the job prospects of electrical engineering(power) at delhi. What should i prefer between power and chemical at delhi?

PL said...

@mayank
job prospects are certainly very good for electrical engineering(power) with a focus on the power companies....but it isn't that you can't get placement in core companies of electrical....
selecting between power and chemical are like selecting which place to go for a vacation - singapore or new york..... :P ....as far as placements are concerned, you don't have to worry in either branch. It's because these two branches are poles apart, a decision making for some else becomes difficult....go through the course structure....and decide for yourself....

though, power might have slightly better placements on an average....but then, that could very easily differ from year to year

Unknown said...

1 iit-3289
2 aieee- air 283 and state 12
3 bitsat score 337
so according to you what is my best option
to fill in jee admission form what should be my priority bhu-electrical/mechanical or new iit computer/electrical.incase new iit which centre should i prefer.
also which is best college that i can take through aieee.
people say its iiit hyderabad but its ranking is far away from dce/pec &even thapar.
please answer my doubts

anmol chopra said...

also i want to know whether i should take civil or metalurgy in iits or some other respectable fields in bhu or new iit.
i also want to know about oppurtunities after doing civil or metalurgy and even biotech

PL said...

@dheeraj.super
congrats for the rank....electrical and mechanical are two branches with almost nothing common between them. The advantage of taking electrical is that generally you can easily shift to the IT-related fields as electrical is after all a mother branch for IT....it's also easier to get software jobs, as one would call it.....though, placements in mech are also very good....chose your branch according to your preference....i could tell you though, that electrical is supposedly the toughest branch in kharagpur...

high demand for iitb and low demand for kgp....this was a question which i expected long back from someone...but it's you who asked it....anyway, that is primarily because of the 'city-life' factor which is missing from kgp that students usually refrain from going there. also, usually, companies prefer going to an IIT which is nearer to them....so, they go to an iit like bombay or delhi quite easily while officials in kgp have a tough time convincing them to come down to a small place like kgp....to come to kgp for recruitment, they would have to come down to kolkata and then come to kgp by road....
this is all, stating very STRONGLY, considering the fact that placements in iit kharagpur are very good and you don't need to have inhibitions going there unless you are crazy about city-life...one thing's for sure, because of this lack of city-life, the campus is abuzz with a flurry of activities which no other campus could boast of...

PL said...

@knightrider
commenting about the placements of new iits is beyond our scope, and for that matter, any living being's....though, they would be good for sure - thanks to the brand

also, predicting about the branches your rank could fetch in a new IIT is damn difficult...guess, u just have to play the waiting game....just make sure that you fill in all the options when you go for counseling

PL said...

@aditya
if you're talking from the placement point of view, going by the current trend - i'd vouch for cs@dce

PL said...

@anmol
congrats for the wonderful ranks you've secured
we aren't suggesting anyone to go for new iits unless you are absolutely crazy about the iit brand or you aren't getting anything anywhere else.....the main problem being the fact that new iits are a very dicey choice....they might click, or might not....it's not possible to say anything at this stage....hence, we'd vouch for it-bhu

talking about the best you could take through aieee, take cs in either dce or iiit hyd....don't give a damn about rankings(in particular, india today rankings - read our section in http://engineering-portal.blogspot.com )
iiit hyderabad is way better than pec or thapar when it comes to cs departments

saiganesh said...

what would you suggest? a)cse(hons) in bits pilani-pilani or hyd campus or b) cse in iiit-h c) elec. in new iits?

PL said...

@knightrider
sorry if you felt this reply came a bit late. I'd say, cse(bits pilani); cse (iit-h) in that order.....and, take cse in hyd campus over electronics in new iits....mainly because the new iits don't even have a proper infrastructure in place which is certainly not the case with bits hyd

hi

thanks for all the help and support.

i have been alloted a seat in B.Tech. Mining Engineering at ITBHU.

i am confident that i will get a seat in Mech. Engg. at NIT bhopal if not at Nit trichy/surathkal/warangal.

though i am interested in Mech. Engg. i have no qualms about taking up mining engg.

what in your opinion would be the better option?

also comment on the scope for higher studies in mining.

My friend has got Mech. at IIT Punjab(New IIT). So he is confused what to chose between Mech at IIT Punjab and Mech. at BITS, Pilani.
Also he can get CS at NSIT/DCE. Should he go for it?

@all
we are very apologetic for not being able to address the issues immediately for the past 10 days. Even though we tried our best, but due to acute constraints, we could not access the internet. I understand that it might be late for responding, but still if it might help

@knightrider
it's pretty all right even if you ask the question another hundred times...your future's at stake
I would still go for CSE at bits pilani first, then iiit-h and then the dual degree in bhu...a completely personal opinion with a slight bias towards a 4 year degree and my favorite branch - cse

@bhuva
you could take up mech at NIT bhopal, no issues with that. but make sure that you do well in your stream. try finishing one of the top five students if you want a good core placement (though, certainly this is not a strict criteria, but it helps)
Though, I could tell you that being from ITBHU will give you a slight advantage when you try for higher studies. we have very little idea about higher studies in mining - not many go for it...

@mayank
if it's mech at IIT punjab and BITS Pilani, go for BITS without doubt. CS at NSIT/DCE is equally good. take the one which suits your preference of subject
